How to Overcome Complacency in the New Year

Complacency is defined in the Cambridge Dictionary as “a feeling of calm satisfaction with your own abilities or situation that prevents you from trying harder”.  Sometimes after we have a productive year with promising profits, we can become comfortable at this new level of achievement.  However, it is usually when one becomes comfortable that you notice a decline in growth.  There are a million excuses as to why growth can slow down, but most of the time the root of the issue is that you have become too complacent.

Here at Davis & Massey Insurance we take initiative in incorporating behaviors into our daily lives to avoid complacency.  Here are 8 tips that we use and find helpful to overcome complacency.

1.     Embrace the Process:  Everything takes time.  You need to trust that the steps in which you take will eventually lead you to reach your goals.  Every step of the way provides you with learning opportunities, so take your time to learn as much as you can.

2.     Enforce Creativity and Innovation:  Everyone thinks differently, so it helps to find ways that make you think outside of the box.  Get creative and find enjoyment in your new way of working.  Whether it be finding new ways to enhance your service, quality of work, or sales producing tactics, this will reinforce the need for change and stimulate growth.

3.     Learn from Your Mistakes:  Take mistakes for what they are, mistakes.  They are bound to happen to everyone at some point in time.  Don’t dwell on the fact that you may have failed, instead learn from your mistake and take away knowledge so you do not repeat the same mistake twice.  Many times, people are afraid to fail, however we learn best from our mistakes. And as they say, you will never know until you try.

4.     Know How to Take Constructive Criticism:  Take a moment to reflect about the last time someone gave you their opinion on something you had done.  How did you react to this?  Did you engage in a conversation, argue, or just dismiss them?  After receiving someone’s criticism, take a moment to digest it, it’s important. Constructive criticism can initially feel like a negative thing, however, know that from a different person’s perspective they may be seeing something you yourself cannot.  So, try to implement people’s feedback and suggestions, they are often more beneficial than they seem.

5.     Find True Motivation:  People search for motivation in all sorts of ways.  Yet, so many people struggle to ever find what truly keeps them motivated day in and day out.  Your true motivation can sometimes be hidden, so dig deep and find out the reasons why you do what you do.  Do not ignore what you love, instead let it drive you to success.  Remain focused on your goals and your true motivation will push you there.

6.     Set a Deadline for Your Goals:  Deadlines often get a bad rap, but when someone can replace the stress with the idea of accountability, deadlines can be a positive reinforcement.  This in turn motivates individuals to act in a timely manner.  Let deadlines serve as a celebration for completing goals.

7.     Never Give Up or Get Discouraged:  When someone begins to implement these tips of learning from mistakes, setting deadlines, and defining goals, it is common to get discouraged if things do not go as planned.  Unfortunately, sometimes you just have to roll with the punches.  When you know how to approach a problem effectively it eliminates that discouraging feeling of just giving up.  If you can prepare yourself for times like these then you will make the process of achieving your goals much more attainable and rewarding.

8.     Take Risks:  Be willing to take a risk and step out of your comfort zone to reach your full potential.  Your biggest risk can end up becoming your greatest reward.

Complacency can happen to anyone at any time if you become too comfortable in your efforts.  Try incorporating some of these helpful tips into your daily life so you can continue to grow personally and professionally.  The key is to constantly try new methods to see what works best for you, and to ask yourself how you can avoid complacency.
