Ghosts and Goblins and Ghouls, oh my! Halloween is just around the corner and as an independent insurance agency we want to ensure that you and your family have a safe and happy holiday.  Before you get too distracted by all the candy and costumes, it is important to go over some safety guidelines with your children and remove any hazards around your own home for everyone's safety.  Some key safety tips you may want to consider for this Halloween are:

1.     Check your outdoor lights.  Are any burnt out?  Replace burned bulbs before the trick or treaters come to ensure visitors safety.

2.     Remove any tripping hazards from your yard, porch, and walkways; such as hoses, bikes, decorations, and toys.

3.     Restrain any pets so they can't accidentally harm someone, runaway, or spook trick or treaters.

4.     Provide your children with a healthy meal prior to going out.  This will discourage them filling up on all their candy as soon as they return.  Also, monitor how much your children are eating to avoid upset tummies.

5.     Tell your children to hold off on eating their treats until they return home, so they can be inspected for any tampering.

6.     Check that costumes are a comfortable fit.  Be sure to check that shoes fit, and costumes are short enough to prevent tripping.  More importantly, check costume packaging to ensure it is flame retardant.

7.     Add reflective tape to trick or treating bags to increase visibility.

8.     Make sure to use flashlights with new batteries so they can stay in working order all night.

9.     Stay in well-lit areas and use sidewalks.  Never cut through yards, alleys, or cross the street in between cars.

10.  Remove all costume make up before bed to prevent skin and eye irritation.

These are just a few of many ways to ensure that you, your family, and your guests can stay safe this Halloween.  As an independent insurance agency, we want to ensure that you and your family have a safe and Happy Halloween!  If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to give us a call at (843) 839-9229.  At Davis & Massey Insurance we take great pride in ensuring that you are aware of the best ways to properly protect you and your family so you all can enjoy the holiday.
