The Pilgrims celebrated the first Thanksgiving in 1621 because they were grateful for their successful harvest in the New World.  During this feast, the Pilgrims demonstrated their tradition of giving thanks for a bountiful feast.  Thanksgiving is a day, as the name suggests, of giving thanks.  As important as food is and has a major role in this holiday, Thanksgiving is not about the food itself.  Thanksgiving is about family, friends, memories, traditions and things that we are thankful for.  With the hustle and bustle of the holiday season among us, we tend to forget about what really is important to us in life.  Having gratitude and being thankful is important this holiday season (and all year long).  Gratitude is defined as “the state of being grateful, thankfulness”.  Many people fail to understand how gratitude can change a life and alter one’s perception for the good.  Gratitude is linked to improving psychological health, as well as reduces a multitude of toxic emotions, from envy and resentment to frustration and regret.  Research confirms that gratitude effectively increases happiness and reduces depression.  Putting a little gratitude in your life daily is the first step to achieving many of your hopes, dreams, and goals.

Here are a few ways that you can be thankful and show gratitude:

·        Show respect for those around you

·        Give compliments

·        Don’t complain

·        Practice mindfulness

·        Spend time with loved ones

·        Appreciate everything

·        Volunteer in the community

·        Give to those less fortunate than you

·        Be an active listener

·        Pay it forward

·        Always say thank you

·        Smile

For this holiday season, think twice about complaining about traffic and long lines, and make sure to give thanks for who and what you have in your life.
